The non-drops - both Firs and Pines - loose moisture, and therefore conditon, slowly. They still need watering to maintain a glossy look - see Tree Care.
Non-drops are generally slower growing and more difficult to prune (than Spruces) - so they cost more. A 6' tree is probably 9-10 years old - so they are actually very reasonably priced for all that extra effort and time taken to grow.
The Firs
Nordmann Fir ~ the best known non-drop. Thick, glossy leaves. Brilliant needle retention. Broad, full-bodied. A stunning variety of Christmas tree.
