A tree stand - just like a vase for cut flowers - holds the tree upright.  A good tree stand has a large water reservoir which enables you to keep it permanently watered.

A 6' cut tree - depending on variety - could drink 1-2 litres of water a day, depending on the temperature of your home.

What to look for in a tree stand

• Wide base - to give good stability
• Water reservoir - large enough to ensure tree never runs out of water (but you do need to refill it 1-2 times/day)
• 3-4 strong screws to secure the base of the tree
