Farmer - Anne Gow

  • Queen's Guide5th generation farmer on her mother's side, 6th generation farmer on her father's side
  • Queen's Guide
  • Left school after A-levels and joined HM Forces (Army).  Served in the WRAC for 8 years until the birth of her eldest son Rory.  Followed the flag for a further 11 years until returning to full-time farming in 2002.
  • 1992-2001 - organised and ran farm open days at Appleton known as 'Lamming at Appleton' the forerunner of Farmer Gow's
  • 1993-2002 - organised and ran the Oxfordshire Hedge Laying Championship in March each year
  • Hosted the 2000 National Hedge Laying Championship with over 100 cutters from across the UK
  • 2001 awarded the first ever Oxfordshire Mark by the Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) for the 'promotion of hedgelaying skills and other traditional rural crafts' 
  • 1992-2002 undertook conservation projects in Appleton Upper & Lower Common including coppice restoration & charcoal production
  • 1999 Awarded for the 'contribution made to the preservation and enhancement of Oxford's heritage by the coppice restoration and charcoal production in Appleton Common Woodlands' by Oxford Preservation Trust
  • Opened Farmer Gow's summer of 2002
  • 2003 - NFU Small Business of the Year ~ Runner-up
  • Bought Henleaze Farm, Longcot in August 2007 and relocated Farmer Gow's to the farm over the following winter.
  • Opened Farmer Gow's at Longcot on 1 January 2008

Mark McCracken

  • 1st generation farmer - starting with work experience at age 14 years for Anne's father Abe Gow
  • Has worked for Anne Gow since 2001 
  • Mark works with the livestock
  • Christmas Tree deliveries
  • Forestry conservation works
  • Firewood processing and deliveries
  • Trailer Rides
  • Farm Visits to schools 
  • general maintanence around the farm

Katherine Hazell

  • Grandfather and uncles were/are farmers - so sort of 3rd generation farmer
  • Joined the farm in March 2010 with 15 years experience in the Leisure industry
  • Has been on a steep learning curve but now has specific responsibilities for 
    • the farm's charity work
    • farm produce - meat & eggs 
    • arrival of new young livestock
    • work experience

Dawn East

  • Full-time when Farmer Gow's was located at Appleton
  • Returned part-time to Farmer Gow's in winter 2009 - having taken a 2-year break to follow kennel and cattery training experiences
  • Has recently completed Diploma in Dog Grooming and runs a small private business 
  • The 'cheerful welcome' at the farm on Saturdays and Sundays 

Stephanie Wilson

  • Studying Wildlife Conservation at Nottingham Trent University
  • Work experience from February 2010 to March 2011
  • Returns to the farm during University holidays
  • Rapidly gaining experience and confidence with all the farm species, routine care, treatments ...

Dale Whitehorn

  • Work experience November 2010 - February 2011
  • No previous farming experience but learning every single day!
  • Work experience projects include - forestry, firewood kindling processing, working with the livestock, supporting Meet the Animals, general assistant
  • Now one of first Apprentices - studying Customer Care

Lucy Shurey

  • Work experience 2012 - 2013
  • No previous farming experience but learning every single day!
  • Now an Apprentices - studying Business Administration
