The Late Summer Bank Holiday
That long-awaited August bank holiday is just around the corner. In 1871 the August Bank Holiday was proposed by politician Sir John Lubbock to give bank and financial staff a day off to enjoy summer weather or watch cricket. It is now the ultimate late-summer treat we all love. Here on the farm, it marks the magical bridge where summer fun winds down and our cozy autumn adventures begin
Obviously our star attraction this Bank Holiday is our two, very cute, sister piglets who have just been named in our recent Facebook prize draw, naming competition. Congratulations to Katrina who won a day ticket for one adult and one child and the chosen names Tickle and Pickle now feature on the piglet’s very own poster in The Meet The Animals Barn. A big thank you to everyone who took part. The Snout Sisters are professionally booping noses and stealing hearts. There's only room for one Miss Piggy, however. And that could lead to a few piggie squabbles!
Delighted that a fresh batch of Biff, Chip, and Kipper's Fun at the Farm, inspired by Farmer Gow's, has landed in our farm shop, ready for readers. Written by Oxford University Press author Roderick Hunt, these nostalgic tales have shaped many childhoods. My children read his stories throughout their primary years and many of today’s parents are familiar with Kipper and his chums. It transpired that Rod was a colleague of my father in a local charity and wished to write a book about Kipper visiting a farm on a school trip. We connected Rod with a local primary school and he joined the children on their school trip. Fun at the Farm was the result – and was the first book to include sparrow in the pictures rather than magpies – Rod took our environmental comments to heart and included a farmer’s friend, common across Europe.
Customers are already ordering their firewood - wood you believe it? Tree-mendous! Okay that’s the end of the puns - promise. Folk are out to beat rising energy prices to keep warm this winter. Cornwall Insight predicts the Ofgem price cap will climb by around 4% this autumn, pushing typical household bills to a three-year high. We source from sustainably managed ancient woodlands within 1-hour's drive of the farm. And have done for years now.
