Ghouls, goats and goblins at Farmer Gow’s

Don’t chicken out, enjoy Halloween on the farm!
Whilst we may not have goblins, we certainly have ghouls and goats! The big kids are officially taking over the patch! Dale, Gemma, and Leeann have been proving that Halloween is strictly for all ages. The great cupboard excavation is complete! Come for the farm animals; stay for apple bobbing, flour power challenges and traditional, old fashioned fun this October.

It’s amazing what’s been lurking in the back of our cupboards! Dale has been on a serious rescue mission to unearth our old Halloween stash. He’s already made friends with a few skeletons, a witch, and a suspiciously cheerful ghost. Our animals are working on their terrifying Halloween poses, but we think some are just too cute to spook! Tickle and Pickle...we're talking about you! We haven't participated in Halloween activities for many years but this year decided it's time to dip our toes back in the water with some decorations and traditional Halloween games. Dale will be running this every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (apart from Friday October 2 when we are setting up) and every day during the school half term. The spooky takeover has officially begun!

Apple Bobbing is on the activity menu this month! Bobbing for apples started centuries ago as a British courting and marriage divination ritual before becoming an autumn festival game. Google tells me that unmarried young women in Britain bobbed for floating apples marked with the names of potential suitors. Biting the apple on the first try allegedly meant true love; two attempts meant a brief romance that would fade; three attempts, tragically, meant the relationship was doomed. It has in recent times, I am pleased to say, transitioned in to a popular Halloween party staple.

Before Halloween became the safe, commercialised "trick-or-treat" holiday we know today, the late 19th and early 20th centuries were dominated by aggressive neighbourhood pranks. Flour was a weapon of choice for serious mischief-makers! Ours of course, will be a much more civilised affair but I imagine it might get a little messy! Our animals will officially be on Halloween security duty. No tricks allowed, purely treats! I hasten to add the only thing to fear this October is missing out on a wicked time at Farmer Gow's. Make a note, in macabre red, that we will be open every day of the school half term.
